Nanny Watch explores how structured community observations can strengthen understanding of the Nanny-Delvin catchment. CSSI stream checks, habitat notes, photographs, invasive-species records, ecological safeguards and checks on nature-based measures can be connected into a more useful picture of catchment condition.

Citizen science does not replace statutory monitoring or professional investigation. It extends the evidence network and helps identify where closer attention, verification or restoration may be needed.

What Nanny Watch Is Developing

Nanny Watch is developing a practical way to organise community observations so they can help build a living picture of pressures, ecological condition, restoration opportunities and change through time across the Nanny-Delvin catchment.

CSSI is an important entry point, but it is not the entire system. Its interpretation becomes stronger when it is considered alongside habitat, flow conditions, recent weather, land use, photographs and repeat visits.

  • It does not replace laboratories, regulators or qualified ecological assessment.
  • It does not assume that every observation demonstrates a pollution source.
  • It does not recommend intervention without site-specific review.

The Decision-Support Question

The value of a community record is not determined only by how many observations are collected. It depends on whether the record helps answer:

  • Who should review or act on it?
  • What should be checked again?

Implementing Nature-Based Solutions

Each measure should answer the same field questions: purpose, fit, good function, warning signs, and what to record.

Riparian Buffer

  • Purpose: Slow runoff, trap sediment, reduce nutrient transfer, and support habitat continuity.
  • Where it fits: Stream or ditch margins with runoff pressure, bank vulnerability, or habitat opportunity.
  • Good function: Continuous vegetated strip, stable cover, low bare soil, limited trampling.
  • Record: Width, continuity, poaching, vegetation condition, bank damage, gaps.

Constructed Wetland

  • Purpose: Intercept nutrient-rich flows, slow water, store sediment, and support biodiversity.
  • Where it fits: Suitable interception points with enough space and manageable inflow.
  • Good function: Clear flow path, wetland vegetation, no major scour, no obvious bypass.
  • Record: Water presence, vegetation cover, blockage, erosion, bypass, litter.

Sediment Trap or Pond

  • Purpose: Capture coarse material and reduce downstream sediment transport.
  • Where it fits: Pathways where sediment movement is visible or expected.
  • Good function: Defined inlet and outlet, stored material where expected, no collapse.
  • Record: Fill level, overtopping, erosion, vegetation encroachment, maintenance need.

Hedgerow or Corridor Planting

  • Purpose: Support biodiversity, connectivity, shelter, and field-edge roughness.
  • Where it fits: Boundaries, edges, transitions, and corridor links.
  • Good function: Healthy growth, low dieback, limited browsing, clear continuity.
  • Record: Survival rate, gaps, guards, weed pressure, browsing, connectivity value.

Fencing and Stock Exclusion

  • Purpose: Protect banks, reduce trampling, and allow riparian recovery.
  • Where it fits: Livestock-access reaches with visible margin pressure.
  • Good function: Fence intact, access controlled, bank vegetation recovering.
  • Record: Fence condition, access points, poaching, exposed bank, regrowth.

Spartina and Estuary Stewardship

This is a distinct estuary issue. It should be monitored carefully and handled through guided review, not casual volunteer removal.

Why Spartina Matters

Spartina can alter marsh structure, sediment behaviour, access, and habitat condition. The right response is site-specific and should consider ecology, permissions, timing, and risk.

CSSI provides a simple and repeatable entry point into biological observation. In this prototype, the score does not stand alone: it travels with habitat evidence, site conditions, photographs, repeat visits and a clear route for review.

What CSSI Contributes to the Catchment Picture

CSSI gives trained volunteers a structured way to recognise broad aquatic invertebrate indicator groups and make a preliminary assessment of stream health.

A CSSI result is most useful when its location, recent weather, flow state, habitat condition, photographs and sampling limitations are recorded with it. Repeat visits can then help reveal whether an apparent pattern persists.

Traffic-light calendar for kick sampling

Use this as a precautionary guide for CSSI-style sampling in shallow stony riffles: shallow, gravelly or cobbly, fast-flowing stream sections. Local observations always override the calendar.

No-kick rule

If you see freshened gravel, nest-like depressions, adult lampreys, spawning fish, eggs, fry, or unusual fish activity, do not kick sample. Record the observation with photos and move the activity to visual survey only.

  • Visual-only alternatives include photos, habitat notes, algae cover, fine sediment, cattle access, outfalls, bank damage, flow observations, and basic water-quality readings where trained.
  • This is a community precaution guide, not a licence to enter private land, disturb protected habitat, or work in unsafe water conditions.
  • For formal Q-value assessment or sensitive sites, defer to EPA, LAWPRO, Inland Fisheries Ireland, NPWS, landowner, and trained-coordinator guidance.
